The Morristown Cotillion was started in 1949 by a group of mothers to provide a formal, social event for their children. In the 50s and 60s, the Cotillion was an invitation-only “coming out” dance for escorted young women wearing white gowns and long white gloves. Through the decades the Cotillion has evolved and changed with the times. The early years of white dresses, long gloves, and tuxedos have given way to long dresses, short dresses and pantsuits for young ladies and coats and ties for young men. Instead of students ballroom dancing to the music of a small orchestra, they now dance to contemporary music played by a DJ. The invitation list has also grown over the years to include both private and public schools in Morris and Somerset Counties.
The Morristown Cotillion is an opportunity for your child to attend a wonderful dance with their classmates, meet new friends and have fun. In keeping its traditional focus on proper etiquette, the Cotillion continues to maintain the custom of a receiving line, where the young guests shake hands with the Patronesses and thank them for their invitation.
We hope that parents will appreciate the standards of the Cotillion by reinforcing to their children the importance of manners, appropriate dress and tasteful dancing. We would also ask for your cooperation in returning your RSVP promptly.
The Morristown Cotillion Committee is comprised of several parents (aka Patronesses) from each of the included schools. These volunteers work tirelessly to plan and chaperone a memorable night for the students.
